古语「有难し」arigatashi変化了今日的「ありがとう（有难う）」。
今日的「ありがとう」当然是「ありがとうございます（有难う御座います）」的缩短形、可是这句原来一句古语表现「
有り难き幸せ（ありがたきしあわせ）」。

因为日语「有る」的意思是「存在」exist, 「有难し」是「不能存在」, hard to exist.
Then, 「有り难き幸せ」means
"It's my happiness that is (as high as) hard to be exist"
or
"Your are so kind person who should be rare"

Even if the sentese is marely idiom, every Japanese surely understand the real meaning of 「有り难う」
It's more indirect than "thank you" or "谢谢", but I feel it a beautiful and sophisticated expression, if I can say.
