The hotels and catering sector is notorious for high
rates of staff turnover and most of the case study organisations seemed resigned
to this situation, regarding it as a ``fact of life''. However, some of the
organisations considered their turnover to be lower than others. Reasons given
included ``a good team spirit'', ``hands-on'' management style, paying above
the ``going rate'', looking after staff well, management accessibility, a
``family atmosphere'' and the interaction of job and social life.
